About Translit

A simple, modern tool for Russian transliteration

What is Translit?

Translit is a free online tool that converts text between the Latin alphabet and Russian Cyrillic script in real time. It is designed for anyone who needs to write Russian but doesn't have a Cyrillic keyboard — or who needs to romanize Russian text for passports, signage, email addresses, or informal communication.

Who is it for?

How does it work?

Translit uses the informal "translit" convention widely adopted on the Russian internet. This standard maps Latin letter combinations to their phonetically equivalent Cyrillic characters. For example, typing privet produces привет, and ya tebya lyublyu becomes я тебя люблю.

Multi-character sequences are prioritized — shш, zhж, chч, shhщ, yaя, yuю, and so on. Single letters follow standard phonetic mapping.

Privacy first

All text conversion happens entirely inside your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never sent to any server, stored in a database, or shared with third parties. We have no access to anything you type.

Translit is free to use and is supported by advertising. We partner with Google AdSense to display relevant ads. These ads may use cookies to show you personalized content. You can learn more and manage your preferences in our Privacy Policy.
